Lambert, John Born in Philadelphia to a prominent family in 1861, John Lambert took early interest in the arts. As a young boy he traveled abroad with family and later enrolled at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After ten years of study, first as artist, then architect, Lambert turned full attention to fine art and studied at Academie Julien in Paris in 1888. Upon his return to US he quickly established himself as a portrait painter. More known today for his generous philanthropy than painting, upon his death in 1907 he willed $30,000 of family wealth to Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art with instructions it be used for the purpose of acquisitions of art by yet undiscovered artists.
